A New Beginning for Children at Oklahoma Children’s Hospital OU Health.
For a child who has moved from placement to placement and walked through more front doors than they can count, the next door they enter can change everything.
That is why the new behavioral health space at Oklahoma Children’s Hospital OU Health matters so deeply. During our recent tour, it became clear that this new children’s behavioral health facility is being thoughtfully designed to support healing, hope, and long-term stability for children and families across Oklahoma.
Kirk Elam, Samantha Galloway, and Shannon Holcomb had the opportunity to walk through a space where every detail reflects a commitment to person-centered care. This is more than a children’s behavioral health facility. It is a place where young people can begin again in an environment built with compassion and purpose.
The intention behind the design is evident from the moment you enter. The team is focusing on the needs of children, supporting families, and creating the conditions that make meaningful healing possible.
One of the most significant features of the new facility is a dedicated unit for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This specialized behavioral health program addresses a critical need for families seeking expert mental health care tailored to children with unique developmental needs.
Children will have meaningful choices in how they engage in treatment and recovery, including outdoor spaces to move and breathe, a basketball area, music, art, and dance therapy, and a family resource center filled with tools and support.
This is not one-size-fits-all care. The team is meeting children where they are and helping them discover what matters most to them, because true healing begins when children feel seen, heard, and understood.
This transformational effort is led by Tracy Cothran, President of Children’s Services, and Dr. Amber Nealy, Vice President of Operations. Their leadership demonstrates what person-centered care looks like in practice. From the thoughtful design of the building to the warm greetings offered by every team member we encountered, the culture of kindness and respect was evident throughout our visit.
OU Health is building the kind of partnership we believe in—one that puts people first and commits to doing the work the right way. We are excited about what lies ahead and honored to be part of an effort that can help change the trajectory for children who deserve stability, healing, and a brighter future.
